The Mining Association of Canada (MAC) is the national organization
of the Canadian mining industry. It comprises companies engaged
in mineral exploration, mining, smelting, refining, and semi-fabrication.
Member companies’ account for the vast majority of Canada’s
output of metals and major industrial materials.
The Association’s functions are to promote the interests
of the industry nationally and internationally, to work with governments
on policies affecting minerals, to inform the public and to promote
cooperation between member firms to solve common problems. The MAC
works closely with provincial and territorial mining associations
across Canada and in other countries.
MAC has created a new position with its primary purpose to focus
on communications and stakeholder relations. MAC now seeks a dynamic,
knowledgeable professional with experience in government affairs
and communications. |

| SCOPE |
 |
|
Overall accountability to the VP, Government Affairs to provide
input on a range of communications, media and government affairs
matter. The incumbent is seen as the “communications/media”
expert within the MAC staff.
The Communications Manager will develop all MAC communications
activities in support of the association’s objectives.

| KEY RESPONSIBILITIES |

|
MEDIA RELATIONS
- Verifying facts, writing and sharing messages with the industry
- Correcting misinformation in a timely manner
- Producing media fact sheets, press releases and press kits
- Conducting proactive media outreach national media
- Handling media requests in a timely manner
- As appropriate, act as a spokesperson for the MAC and mining industry
to the media
- Coordinating individual meetings with members of the media
- Writing and submitting letters to the editor and opinion editorial
submissions
- Identifying opportunities for positive news stories
MEDIA MONITORING
- Daily review of print and e-media clippings, providing analyses
and tactical recommendations for action
- Monitoring and evaluation of social media
DATABASE MANAGEMENT
- Maintenance of media and stakeholder databases
- Maintain open and positive relations with stakeholder company communications
and media specialists to share information and ensure consistent industry
messaging
THIRD PARTY RESEARCH
- Work with internal and external colleagues to coordinate and analyze
industry messaging
- Coordinate a review of available economic and/or environmental
data
- Conduct occasional research on industry issues, facts and figures
- Act as an “expert” by keeping abreast of public relations/communications
activities of similar organizations
PRODUCT AND MAINTENANCE OF BRANDING COLLATERAL
- Manage all corporate messaging including communications support
for the Towards Sustainable Mining initiative
- Writing and editing of copy for all produced printed and electronic
materials including newsletters
- Manage corporate logo and branding policies
- Development and production of audiovisual presentations
WEBSITE
- Work with suppliers to develop and maintain website(s) for posting
of industry facts, key messages, charts and other visual materials.
OUTREACH TO GOVERNMENT STAKEHOLDERS
- Provides advocacy and communications support to the VP of Government
Affairs to develop greater communication with government
- Monitoring the activities of stakeholders
- Identifying opportunities for industry members to attend government
and stakeholders events

| CANDIDATE PROFILE |

|
Education:
- University degree in journalism, public relations, communications,
marketing, or an equivalent combination of experience and training
in a related field
Experience:
- Significant experience working in a public relations, communications,
or marketing communications role
- Experience developing and managing media relations as well
as grassroots public relations campaigns
- Experience and understanding of government relations and
the role of advocacy; experience gained on Parliament Hill would
be ideal
- Knowledge and experience of design and production (print,
web, and multimedia) processes
- Experience with traditional and social media
- An affinity for, and knowledge of, news and current events,
especially in the mining industry
Knowledge:
- High knowledge and hands-on abilities with modern communications
technologies
- Communication campaigns
- Knowledge of the mining industry an asset
