The Canada Mining Innovation Council (CMIC) was incorporated
on 18 December 2008 as a not-for-profit corporation supported by
a Board of Directors and a Secretariat, which is supported by Natural
Resources Canada and the Canadian Institute of Mining. CMIC is a
network of industry, academic and government leaders whose purpose
is to improve the competitiveness of a responsible Canadian mining
industry by strengthening mining research excellence across Canada.
CMIC’s five strategic goals are:
- Drive research for mining innovation to address critical needs
- Enhance sustainable research performance through highly qualified
people
- Achieve innovation potential through collaboration
- Create an innovation culture linked to industry need and
- Enroll key decision makers to support mining research and innovation.
To ensure the collaboration of researchers and research institutions
working together and to enable access to research funding opportunities,
federal, provincial and territorial mines’ ministries endorsed
the creation of a pan-Canadian mining research and innovation strategy,
the driving force behind CMIC.
The new Executive Director’s challenge is to deliver the
outcomes required by the implementation of this pan-Canadian mining
research and innovation strategy and any other assignments as conceived
by CMIC.

| SCOPE |

|
The Executive Director is the advocate and champion of CMIC’s
vision and mission and has all the authority to execute its mandate
as defined by the Board. The Executive Director is responsible for
the formation and sustainability of the Council, the implementation
of “The Pan-Canadian Mining Research and Innovation Strategy”
and overseeing the work of staff to be recruited in areas including
member relations, communications, public and governmental relations,
fundraising, and project development.

| RESPONSIBILITIES |

|
- Provide strong leadership in the assessment and revision of “The
Pan-Canadian Mining Research and Innovation Strategy” and its
implementation through an approved action plan.
- Consult with and advise the Board on policy, program and operational
matters.
- Seek appropriately balanced input and interaction from multiple stakeholders
and constituencies such as universities, research groups, the mining
industry and Federal and Provincial agencies
- Actively pursue existing and new institutional relationships which
will allow the organization to achieve its research objectives
- Actively pursue, recruit and nurture membership in the Council
- Ensure resources are used effectively in a manner consistent with
the directives given by the Board including the budget.
- Facilitate the effective functioning of the Executive Committee of
the CMIC Board, and the CMIC Board throughout the year, and the Council
membership activities like the annual general meetings and other pertinent
meetings, workshops, activities and general communication.
- As an innovative champion of growth, lead the organization to its
next stage of evolution
- Establish organizational measures of effectiveness and monitor progress
against annual and long-term goals.
- Motivate the employees and mobilize their energies towards common
shared goals

| CANDIDATE PROFILE |
 |
|
Education:
- University degree and/or equivalent experience in related
to exploration, mining, geology or metallurgy; an advanced degree
would be an asset.
Experience:
- Demonstrated record of success as a senior executive with
strong leadership qualities
- Experience working with volunteer Boards; the ability to collaborate
with a strong Board to drive forward CMIC’s agenda
- Sound appreciation of the mining industry and its diversity
in the pan-Canadian context. Experience related to the broad
aspects of the mining industry, key technical drivers and issues,
and the role that research/educational institutions and service
providers play
- Good understanding of the importance and issues relating to
R&D and Innovation and their relevance to exploration, mining,
metallurgy and/or the environment
- Well established record of networking nationally (and internationally);
networks in the mining sector would be a definite asset
- Experience orchestrating and facilitating major events
